Rumination is part of Sophie’s ‘Commodities’ collection, which shines a light on the way that humans have commodified wildlife and nature. The collection delivers emotion and vulnerability through placing the subjects of the paintings on plinths, like exhibits in a museum. ‘Rumination’ is the counterpart painting to ‘Reflection’, in which a chimpanzee sits atop a plinth, covering its face in a pose reminiscent of Rodin’s ‘Le Penseur’.

While ‘Le Penseur’ draws viewers to the intelligence and introspection of man, Sophie’s ‘Reflection’ draws viewers to the sentience of animals. ‘Rumination’ goes one step further, by focusing on the chimpanzee’s covered face.

The piece is one of the few paintings completed by Sophie that conveys depth of emotion without being able to see the animal’s eyes.
